May 3, 2004--New OPM3® standards from the Project Management Institute (PMI® ) designed to help organizations to choose the right projects and to deliver those projects successfully were the subject of a workshop sponsored last month by the Hong Kong SAR Government. The PMI® Hong Kong Chapter assembled a group of chapter members and project professionals to undergo comprehensive training in the new PMI® OPM3® standard in order to evaluate the OPM3® theory, assessment process, and practicalities of implementing OPM3®. Developed by hundreds of professionals in industry and government in 35 countries, the PMI® 's OPM3® standard is a maturity model that explains best practices for selecting and managing projects in a way that supports strategic goals. Through an assessment using the OPM3® standard, an organization's current capability profile or level of maturity is identified, as well as next steps for becoming more capable. The OPM3® workshop was led by John Schlichter, who led the development of OPM3® for several years before launching OPM Experts, LLC (http://www.opmexperts.com), a firm that is developing tools to make OPM3® implementation user friendly.

The workshop is an integral step in the implementation of the PMI® Hong Kong Chapter's initiative to reach out to organizations in Hong Kong to raise awareness and standards of project management. This initiative is sponsored by the Hong Kong SAR Government's Professional Service Development Assistance Scheme.

"Our belief is OPM3® will become a globally accepted standard in organizational project management, and provide the roadmap for companies who want to achieve excellence in project, program, and portfolio management. One of our goals this year is to promote OPM3® to enterprises and corporations in Hong Kong . We accomplished this goal with the excellent OPM3® Assessors Workshop given by John Schlichter of OPM Experts, LLC," said Kevin Chui, the Vice President of PMI® Hong Kong Chapter.

Established in 1969, the Project Management Institute (PMI®) is the leading professional organization dedicated to project management today, with over 100,000 members worldwide. In 1998, PMI® was recognized by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as an Accredited Standard Developer.

Released to the public in December 2003, the OPM3® standard contains roadmaps of capabilities leading to best practices, and explains how to assess an organization against the roadmap to see where an organization stands on the journey to higher maturity levels.
